The inaugural Sport Integrity Week, dedicated to combating the manipulation of sports competitions, is taking place in Athens from November 27 to December 1. This collaborative effort, organized by the Council of Europe, the International Olympic Committee, INTERPOL, UEFA, the Greek National Platform for Sport Integrity (EPATHLA), the Hellenic Football Federation (HFF), and hosted by the Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC), aims to delve into recent trends, best practices, and challenges in addressing the manipulation of sporting events.
The opening ceremony featured Deputy Minister of Sports Yannis Vroutsis, Minister of Citizen Protection Yannis Economou, HOC President Spyros Capralos, and HFF President Panagiotis Baltakos. The kickoff session included unique perspectives on match-fixing from former international footballer Takis Fyssas and former international basketball player Kostas Tsartsaris.
Throughout the week, dedicated regional seminars by the IOC and INTERPOL for representatives of eight countries (Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Georgia, Greece, Israel, Malta, Romania, Türkiye) and by UEFA and HFF for football stakeholders are featured. Additionally, the 7th meeting of the Follow-up Committee of the Macolin Convention is scheduled within the Sport Integrity Week on November 29-30. Chaired by the Secretary General and Head of EPATHLA, George Mavrotas, this meeting will bring together representatives of the 9 States Parties to the Macolin Convention, including France for the first time, along with observers such as Interpol, IOC, FIFA, UEFA, and ULIS. The main agenda topics include data protection, reasonable betting, links to money laundering, and monitoring the implementation of the Macolin Convention. (Wxp News)
