An Indian national has been charged in the United States with plotting the assassination of Gurpatwant Pannun, the founder of Sikhs for Justice, an organization advocating for a sovereign Sikh state, announced the U.S. attorney's office in Manhattan on Wednesday. Nikhil Gupta, who was arrested by Czech authorities in June, awaits extradition, and attempts to reach him for comment have been unsuccessful. The charges allege that Gupta, while in India, conspired to carry out the assassination of a U.S. citizen of Indian descent who publicly supports the creation of an independent Sikh state in New York City. This development follows a recent statement by a senior Biden administration official, revealing the thwarting of a plot to kill a Sikh separatist in the U.S. and expressing concerns about potential involvement by the government in New Delhi.
